Chapter 18

Riot was drunk, the irritating little shite. Though I was almost more annoyed with myself, for not being as annoyed with him as I should have been. He had done most of the talking for our group with our new tentative allies, which I couldn’t help but be begrudgingly grateful for since I couldn’t speak and Bullet used his faintly amused expression to hide the fact that he wasn’t used to socializing in large groups.

Grace held her own, but it was clear she wasn’t comfortable being the center of attention. Something that she’d have to get used to, I thought with a grimace.

“I think we should go,” she said with a light laugh as Riot draped an arm over her shoulder, slumping against her. I pushed my chair out so I could move behind them, grabbing the collar of his shirt and yanking him upright before he crushed her. “It’s been a really, really long day.”

“I imagine traveling between realms really takes it out of you,” Vasileios laughed, standing at the same Grace did, Riot somewhat precariously held up between Grace and I. “I’m glad you joined us for dinner though, this has been most interesting.”

“Thank you for hosting us, and giving us somewhere to stay. And clothing us,” Grace added with a weak laugh. “We’re in your debt.”

“Not at all,” Vasileios shrugged. “This is what we do for any agathos or daimon who comes to our community looking for a place to belong.”

His words made something in my chest constrict. I’d invested a huge amount of time and money into creating spaces for Keres daimons where they could let out their anger in healthy ways, where they could fight and be free to be themselves, but also learn not to be so arrogant as to draw the attention of the gods the way I had. Occasionally, I’d hired non-Keres daimons to work at my clubs, if they were useful to me, but other than that I hadn’t given them much thought. What did that say about me? It would have never occurred to me to create the kind of sanctuary Vasileios had here.

Grace gave me a curious look from underneath Riot’s arm, and I wondered how much she was picking up from me as our connection strengthened.

“I love you, Gracie,” Riot slurred, smacking a wet-sounding kiss on her temple as we began to make our way slowly back through the grove, leaving the sound of clinking glasses and laughter behind us. “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

I snorted. I’d certainly never be able to beat the shit out of Riot ever again, having seen him all soppy and drunk over his missus. And maybe he was growing on me just a little bit.

“Jealous?” Riot teased, elbowing me in the ribs. “You’re so fucking jealous, man. You want Grace to love you too, but you had to go and be all difficult about it.”

I cut him a glare that I doubted he’d be able to see in the dark, even if his eyes were focusing properly, which was unlikely at best.
